Description: A control structure is a water level control structure (often associated with a detention pond) that is engineered to discharge stormwater overflow at a controlled rate. The top of the control structure should be at the elevation of the collection asset’s high water design.Hillsborough County categorizes CONTROL STRUCTURES into 2 distinct subtypes.BOX: A control structure box is one what is composed of walls that connect to each other in such a way that it directs water from the high level water line down towards a pipe. It always will be connected to a pipe (where water flow is from the control box into the pipe). When they are found in a ditch, they may closely resemble a ditch bottom inlet, however the key point that distinguishes them is that they are built to only intake water at the designed high water level of the ditch, not just to drain the ditch itself.STAND-ALONE WEIR: A weir is a structure that is within a collection/conveyance stormwater asset and is designed to control its flow characteristics. It is typically a single wall or a series of parallel walls where the top edge is in line with the high water mark.
