Description: CHANNEL: Channels are non-enclosed assets designed to have the ability to convey stormwater. Hillsborough County categorizes CHANNELS into 6 distinct subtypes.DITCH: Roadside Ditches are parallel to a roadway and is intended for collection of roadside drainage. They can be dry based on environmental conditions. Off system ditches are generally perpendicular to a roadway; they leave or are outside the typical right-of-way and function to convey water away from the right of way. They can be dry based on environmental conditions. A conveyance specifically designed to transmit water over and around a structure or dam. Grassed depressions that are shallower than ditches … generally no more than 6 inches in the centerline depth. They have been designed to resist soil erosion which may result from stormwater runoff. Flumes are generally steeply inclined, artificially lined conveyances. They may be designed with Energy Dissipaters.CANAL: Canals are designed more for conveyance than for collection. They usually have water in them. They tend to be larger and deeper. For Hillsborough County purposes, it is the Public Works Systems Planning Sections decision as to whether or not such an asset is designated as a type of ditch or as a canal.FLUME:Flumes are generally steeply inclined, artificially lined conveyances. They may be designed with Energy Dissipaters.
